Our Company Story
Beyond Identity is the first and only company to provide passwordless identity management. The Beyond Identity team is composed of cybersecurity and identity management professionals who are passionate about restoring digital trust and building a fundamentally secure way to authenticate and authorize users while protecting privacy.
Two and a half decades ago, our founders, Jim Clark and Tom Jermoluk, made the World Wide Web accessible to all and ready for business – Jim with the release of the Netscape browser and SSL for secure Internet transactions, and Tom with large-scale home broadband access with @Home Network. However, as businesses, governments, and individuals increasingly relied on the Internet, bad actors eroded trust, stole intellectual property, and pilfered funds.
With hundreds of billions of passwords in the world today, we continue to rely on this fundamentally insecure authentication model. Passwords are insecure because these “shared secrets” transit networks, are stored insecurely in databases, are shared among friends and family, and are reused across multiple apps. In fact, the Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report estimates that 81% of hacking-related breaches are the direct result of stolen credentials.
“Beyond Identity’s patents-pending solution is based on proven technology that enables our customer to go beyond passwordless authentication to complete passwordless identity management.”
Alternate methods of authentication, such as password managers and multi-factor authentication, exist, but each of these methods has their pitfalls, and they don’t solve the root “shared secret” problem. Beyond Identity’s patents-pending solution employs self-signed X.509 certificates on endpoint devices to fundamentally change the way users log in to the network. It extends the server-to-server chain of trust established with TLS to users and their devices. It is a fundamentally secure model, based on proven technology that enables our customer to go beyond passwordless authentication to complete passwordless identity management.
The company is funded by New Enterprise Associates (NEA), the legendary Silicon Valley venture capital firm, and Koch Disruptive Technologies (KDT), the investment arm of one of the largest private companies in the United States.
